Make Plans Now For VBS 2003!

July 13th - 16th
Mabelvale Church of Christ
Begins Sunday Night @ 5:00 p.m.
7:00 p.m. nightly (Mon.- Wed.)

In John 15:13-14 Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” To have Jesus as a friend is not only the highest honor, comforting and reassuring, it is critical to our salvation. Note that the proof of our friendship with Jesus depends on our keeping His commandments.
VBS focuses on the Bible: the inspired story, the love we have for Jesus, the love we have for each other, how we must obey God, and what we must do to inherit eternal life. Plan now to bring your children and invite your friends to our Vacation Bible School. We will have classes for all ages. Our theme this year will be, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus!”

Hispanic Work Report

Wayne Brewer

Paul wrote, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58). The Lord’s church at Mabelvale will be abounding in the work of the Lord this summer as we assist Oak Grove with their VBS, host our own VBS, make a mission trip to Arizona, and participate in other good works.
As for the Hispanic work, one new area of outreach was with our May Gospel Meeting. Spanish speaking brethren and non-members were invited one evening as prayers and songs were translated, and outlines of the sermon given out in Spanish. This new experience for Mabelvale was successful, as some Ten Hispanics were present. Thanks for your patience that evening.
Efforts to evangelize Hispanics attending the classes at Mabelvale, and to encourage other brethren, resulted in several attending Hispanic Gospel Meetings in Batesville, where Carlos Barrientos of Costa Rica preached, and Getwell in Memphis, where Lionel Cortez of Panama preached. These brethren presented excellent Bible lessons, which gave those attending from Mabelvale an opportunity to study further.
Classes at Mabelvale continue on Sunday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. until about 5:30 p.m., and on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Recently, Hispanic children have been attending our regular Bible classes on Wednesday evenings.
A new opportunity for Mabelvale members that may lead to future involvement in the Hispanic work for some is a summer class to learn Spanish. On Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in adult classroom four there will be a Spanish class. Johnnie Bishop, Genaro Pinchiera, and Wayne Brewer will be coordinating efforts in this.
Our Vacation Bible School in July will be a source of Hispanic outreach, as the VBS will be advertised in El Latino, a Spanish newspaper and in House to House. Children who speak English will be in the regular VBS classes, but for those who speak only Spanish; there will be a class in Spanish, taught by Laura Tollett and Tamara Long. Prior to the VBS, on July 12, there will be door-to-door work in Hispanic areas to promote the VBS and a worship service later in the afternoon. Details are coming soon.
The Hispanic work is also reaching beyond Mabelvale with a Spanish issue of The Gospel Gleaner due out in October, by Wayne teaching the book of Psalms every Friday at the newly formed Spanish School of Preaching in Little Rock and in July at Mayflower’s VBS. Finally, Mabelvale’s influence will reach to Costa Rica in Central America, as Wayne will be going there to preach and teach the gospel in a campaign effort. He and six others, including Ashley and Brian Brewer, will be going to Tilaran, Costa Rica. As you can see the summer will be busy as we at Mabelvale follow the words of Jesus, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel…” (Mark 16:15).

THANK YOU

I just wanted to let you know I sincerely appreciated the Ice Cream Supper in our honor. I especially appreciated the Halley’s Bible Handbook. The signatures of the elders in the Handbook added a great deal of special meaning. I appreciate the congregation dearly and I am thankful for all the lessons I have learned. Thanks again. STRIVING FOR THE CROWN
The apostle Paul must have been a sports fan. He frequently wrote of the Christian life as running a race or participating in the games—perhaps the Olympian or Isthmian or Pythian contests. This program was inspired back in May when our youth were involved in such events. We’ll use some of Paul’s parables to enlighten us on how to run the race and win the crown.
