(via The Pattern--North Main Church of Christ, Malvern, AR) TONGUES
James W. Boyd  Much of the religious world is obsessed with the doctrine that people today can speak in tongues as in Bible times. Speaking in tongues was one of the miracles of the first century as recorded in Scripture. When the apostles were baptized by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost they spoke in tongues. Just what did they do? What ability was given them?
The tongues of Acts 2 and the record of the happenings of Pentecost were nothing more nor less than intelligible, understandable languages that the apostles were able to speak even though the language was not native to them nor had been learned by the normal process of learning. They were miraculously able to convey the gospel to people in a variety of languages. Acts 2:4, 6, 8, 11 leaves us without any question what as to the identity of tongues on Pentecost. It was not gibberish, ecstatic speech, “prayer language,” or any such thing.
The Corinthian church had many who could do the same thing. The miraculous powers bestowed on people other than the apostles was given them by the apostles laying hands on them and giving them this gift. Study the events of Acts 8 and see how this took place. Also Acts 19. The tongues spoken in Corinth were not, as some modern versions mistranslate as well as misinterpret, ecstatic language. They were, as on Pentecost, understandable languages.
The miraculous powers ceased with the death of the apostles, the death of those on whom they laid their hands, and the accomplishment of the purpose for which miracles were given; namely to confirm the word that was preached, Mark 16:20. The word, now confirmed, (Hebrews 2:3-4) removes all need for the miracles, including tongue speaking. Paul wrote 1 Corinthians 12, 13, 14 explaining these matters, the identity of miracles, the purpose of them, the duration of them, even the regulation of them during the time they were used. They have now ceased (1 Corinthians 13).
That which is erroneously called tongues today is non-sensical babble that has been a trait of people throughout the world, regardless of religions, and can be learned, or produced by hyper-emotionalism.
It is unfortunate that tongue speaking confuses some today. The whole thing is an attack on the veracity, the accuracy and all-sufficiency of the written word. Some people always want more than what God has provided. The present claims regarding tongue speaking are untrue as far as being originated by the Holy Spirit, nor are they akin to that which was done in New Testament days. THANK YOU The visits, prayers, calls and food were very much appreciated during my recent surgery. If I may use the words I have often heard Johnny Boyd say after a meal on our turkey hunts: “I feel well nourished,” and I mean that both physically and spiritually. Your kindness will not be forgotten. Thank you. Phil DePriest.

NURSERY Our nursery has been cleaned, disinfected, and remodeled. The nursery is for infants and little ones up to two years of age. The only toys in the nursery are for teaching that age group. For health and safety it is very important that the toys and nursery items remain clean and disinfected because these little ones put most everything in their mouth. In order to handle the nursery in a safe, proper manner, only children under two years of age, their parents and the teachers should be in the nursery. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

WHAT IS “THE RAPTURE” WE'RE HEARING ABOUT?
Talk about “the rapture” has abated somewhat since the turn of the millennium. Fewer books are being published about it, too. Why? However, it is still being taught. What, if anything does the Bible say about it?
