Mabelvale’s Hispanic Work
Wayne Brewer

This Saturday, March 22, we will have another door-to
door campaign and afternoon Gospel Meeting. Spanish
speaking brethren from throughout the state will be here to
assist in this effort, and so there are a number of areas
here we can be of service.
First, we can pray for the safe travel of our Spanish brethren
and for the men who will be preaching. Jose Perales
fromGreen Forrest will preach on the topic “What is the
Authority in Religion, the Church or the Bible?” and Leo
Martinez from Rogers will preach on the topic “The Gospel
of Salvation.”
Second, we can show our support for the work in general,
and to our Hispanic brethren, by being present Saturday
afternoon at for one or both of the worship services. There
will be one at 3:00 p.m. with another to begin @ 4:00 p.m.
Efforts will be made to worship as bilingual as possible,
with prayers translated, singing equivalent songs in both
languages, and sermon outlines in English.
Third, we will provide meals for the workers, and then
invite the visitors to stay after the worship to have a light
meal. Thanks to those who have already signed the meal
list, but at this writing there are still some food needs. See
Susan if you have questions about the meals or helping to
serve.
Fourth, we will need some child care assistance with the
Hispanic children. Hispanics typically bring their families, so
there will be children. We will need some volunteers for the
morning and possibly in the afternoon. (See Wayne to
volunteer).
The lost need the gospel, “the power of God unto
salvation” (Romans 1:16). The Word will be preached and
God will give the increase.

C. M. Pullias and “The Community Church”
By William Boyd

There was a time when “C. M. Pullias” was a household word in Christian homes across the South. He was highly regarded as a Gospel preacher and as an able song leader. He led singing for N. B. Hardeman during the First Tabernacle Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. He is listed as an editor in several of our old hymnals. For a considerable time he wrote the first page articles for the Gospel Advocate. In the 1930’s he was the preacher for the Pearl and Bryan Street Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas and the editor of their paper, The Watchman. His nephew, Athens Clay Pullias, was president of David Lipscomb College (before his apostasy). I learned this from a book called The Life and Works of Charles Mitchell Pullias, which was published by the Gospel Advocate Company in 1948.

Toward the back of the book there are excerpts from The Watchman that sound surprisingly current. C. M. Pullias did not use the term “Praise Team,” but he was mocking them on page 564 when he said,

“I am tempted to propose that four or a quartet of the best paying members do all the paying the next quartet that gets to sing where I go preach. Isn’t singing worship? and isn’t giving worship, too?”

He mentions “The Community Church” on page 571. In connection with a special interdenominational celebration of Pentecost he said,

“One Mr. Jenkins, pastor of ‘Linwood Christian Church,’ has gone so far as to say that ‘Christian Church and church of Christ’ are sectarian, and he calls it ‘The Community Church,’ which means that ‘persons having been baptized in any fashion may join the church,’ and that persons who have ‘not been baptized’ at all may join. If it keeps on it will soon be sectarian to use the Bible. This is but a sample of what ‘our’ editors got into when they agreed to join in to ‘celebrate Pentecost.’”

Problems with praise teams, community churches, and denominational crusades are not new. Where these practices failed the churches retained their New Testament identity, and where they succeeded they lost it. “He that hath an ear to hear, let him hear.”

CONFESSING CHRIST

They crucified Jesus Christ because He said He was the Son of God. If He was not, He was the biggest hoax and fraud the world has ever known. If He was, every tongue must confess Him as such, and every person must submit to His will for their lives here and in the hereafter.
