Scott Perry
In his book, Why I Am A Member of the Church of Christ, Leroy Brownlow unveils
the heart of mankind. He illustrates how misunderstood people are when they
pound their chest and proclaim, “I feel it right here!” Emotions
are a part of man’s heart, but do they provide sufficient grounds on which
one can risk his eternal soul? Brother Brownlow gives and analysis of the heart
and its exercises:
“The heart is that part of man called intellect. The Bible says that the
human heart ‘thinks,’ ‘reasons,’ ‘understands,’and‘believes’[Mat.9:4;13:15;Mk.2:8;Rom.10:10].God
calls this part of man the heart, but man calls it the intellect.”
“The heart is also seen to be that attribute of man called emotion. Man’s
heart embraces feelings: ‘despise,’ ‘desire,’ ‘love,’
and ‘trust’ [2 Sam. 6:16; Rom. 10:1; Matt. 22:37; Prov. 3:5]. So
what God calls the heart, man calls the emotions.”
“The heart is that quality of man called will, which: ‘determines,’
‘intends,’ ‘purposes,’ and ‘obeys’ [ 1 Cor.
7:37; Heb. 4:12; Acts 11:23; Rom. 6:17]. Man calls this quality will or volition;
God calls it the heart.”
“The heart is that faculty of man called conscience, which: ‘condemns
or condemns not’ (1 John 3:20-21). God calls this part the heart; man
speaks of it as the conscience”
“The above Scriptures make it plain that the heart of the inward man is
that part of man which embraces the intellect, emotions, will, and conscience.
It includes the whole of man’s inner nature” not just his emotions.
What Do Elders Do?
*Make sure the truth is preached. * Counsel those having spiritual problems.
* Encourage
new converts. *Decide the direction the church will follow. * Be able to teach.
*Praise those who do good works. *Pray for those they serve and the work. *
Become concerned when someone quits attending worship or gets weak. *Visit the
sick and shut-in. *Try to help people who don’t want help. *Investigate
sticky and sensitive problems in order to keep the church pure. * Cry with the
broken-hearted. *Model Christianity. *Greet visitors and involve new members.
*Work to lead others to Christ. * Oversee preachers’ and deacons’
works. *Hear the appeals of missionaries. *Look for areas of new service. *Work
for a living. *Try to restore the unfaithful and involve the bystanders. *Counsel
young (and sometimes troubled) marriages. *Feel the weight of knowing they will
give account for the souls they shepherd. *Smile when their efforts pay off.
*Smile when they don’t. *Go on to the next problem. *Train others to take
their place . . . and 1001 others daily tasks.
What Should we do?
*Love them. *Pray for them. *Get to know them personally. *Back them in their
work, fulfill their requests if there is no scriptural reason not to, and help
carry out their plan of work. *Speak a word of encouragement to them. *Defend
them if we hear them criticized. *Be thankful that God gave them to us.

“And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing.”

A JAILOR IS CONVERTED
The book of Acts is one of the most exciting books of the Bible. It tells of the birth and rapid growth of Christianity under the most adverse circumstances. It tells how thousands became Christians, but it also tells the story of the conversion of several individuals. One of them was a lowly jailor in Philippi.
