In the last part of 2 Timothy 4:5, Paul instructed Timothy to ³do the
work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.² Recently, I came
across an article from an old ³Fulton County Gospel News² written
by brother
Bill Cline on the work of an evangelist. In it he pointed out how one could
search high and low throughout the Scriptures for the duties of an
evangelist, but he need look no further than 1 Timothy 4:13 and 15. The work
of an evangelist is interpreted by men and women to be different things, but
what does God say an evangelist is to do? How does he make ³full proof²
(fully carry out, Berry¹s) of his ministry?
In 1 Timothy 4:13, 15 Paul penned, ³till I come, give attendance to
reading, to exhortation, to doctrine (teaching, ASV 1901) . . . meditate
upon these things (prophecies, v.14); give thyself wholly to them; that thy
profiting may appear unto all.² Is that all? That¹s all. Now, this
is not to
say that he does not have to fulfill his other responsibilities as a
Christian (Matt. 25:34-40) as all do, but reading, exhortation, and teaching
are first priorities for evangelists in God¹s eyes. He should not be
expected to put other things in front of these responsibilities to God by
anyone. He is to reach as many people as possible with the saving gospel of
Christ, and conform his life to the teachings of Christ through meditation
(diligence, ASV) and personal application that he may be an example to the
believers to follow in so much as he follows Christ.
³Accept Jesus as Your Personal Savior²
Scott Perry
Majority of material taken from Gospel Minutes, vol. 21, no. 32 1972
From the television set, over the radio, in revival meetings and
crusades, on the street and from every corner is heard, ³Accept Jesus as
your personal Savior.² Although it is often used, the expression in never
taught from the Scriptures showing a person how to accept Jesus as a
personal Savior. That Jesus is the one and only Savior the Scriptures
clearly teach (Acts 4:12). It is also true that Jesus is a personal Savior
(2 Cor. 5:10). Sadly, though, the loudest proponents of this expression
leave the unscriptural idea of how to accept Jesus as Savior. To accept
Jesus to them, is to ³just believe and ask Him to save you,² but the
Lord
said, ³Not everyone that saith unto me Lord, Lord shall enter into the
kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in
heaven² (Matt.7:21). Faith alone is not enough (Luke 6:46). Neither will
our
prayers affect our salvation until we hear the words of the Lord and obey
them (Prov.28:9; Heb. 5:9). To be saved, we must accept Jesus as our
personal Savior, but what does that mean? How does one accept Him? What do
we do?
We must accept the teaching (instructions) of Jesus Christ. The gospel
is God¹s power to salvation (Rom.1:16). Some try and count the words of
Jesus as weightier than those of the apostles, but Jesus, Himself, made no
distinction (Luke 10:16). How does one accept the teaching of Jesus or His
apostles? By faith. The Bible records, ³Abraham believed God.² We
must
believe what Jesus has said for us to do and do it (Mark 16:15, 16) just as
Abraham was told what to do by God and he did it.
A conjunction is a ³word that joins words or groups of words²
(Warriner¹s English Grammar, 1996, p. 20). There are only three types of
conjunctions: coordinate, correlative, and subordinate. ³And² is a
coordinating conjunction (p.21). When a sentence contains more than one
idea, the ideas may be equal in rank or unequal (p. 279). Ideas that are of
equal rank are coordinate. ³Co² means equal. ³Ordinate²
means ordered or
ranked. Therefore, ³coordinate² means ³of equal or ordered rank²,
e.g.
³Mrs. Carter is an architect, and Mrs. Murphy is a contractor.²
³The writer of the preceding sentence considered the two ideas of equal
rank² (p. 279). ³He gave them equal emphasis by expressing them in
independent clauses. Now apply these same principles to Mark 16:16,
³He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved . . .²
Will you accept Jesus as your personal Savior?

THANKSGIVING
Surely every American knows the origin and history of Thanksgiving Day in
America. It dates all the way back to the first European settlers on this
continent. But Thanksgiving Day 2002 should be a very special day of thanks
throughout the land. Let¹s make it more than a day of feasting and football,
let¹s pause from our hurried life and sincerely thank God for His grace
toward our nation.
There will not be a bulletin published next week.
