SALVATION

Hugo McCord

Salvation from the guilt of sin is by faith (John 3:16; Acts 10:43; 13:39; 16:31), but “not by faith only” (James 2:24): “the demons believe and tremble” (James 2:19); “Many among the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees, they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue” (John 12:42).
Salvation is by repentance (Acts 11:18), but not by repentance alone (Acts 2:38).
Salvation is by confession (Matthew 10:32); Acts 2:21), but not by confession alone: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my heavenly Father” (Matthew 7:21); “and unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him and cried, ‘You are the Son of God” (Mark 3:11).
Salvation is by baptism (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16), but not by baptism alone, for (1) if you do not believe (in Jesus), you will die in your sins” (John 8:24); and (2) “except you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3); and (3) “whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God,” God dwells in him, and he in God (1 John 4:15).
Paul preached “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27).

Dennis Gulledge

“Friends are made by many acts, and can be lost by just one.”

“We have been so anxious to give our children what we didn’t have that we have neglected to give them what we did have.”

It was Mark Twain who said, “Most people are bothered by the passages of scripture they do not understand, but the ones that bother me are the ones I do understand.”

“Leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.”

“Happiness comes when we stop wailing about the troubles we have and offer thanks for the troubles we don’t have.”

“It’s hard to make people feel at home when you wish they were.”

“People like to say they have an open mind, but with some of them it’s hard to find the opening.”

“Tact: The ability to close your mouth before someone else wants to.”

“Those who think it permissible to tell white lies soon grow color blind.”

“A bit of love is the only bit that will bridle the tongue.”

“Unless there is within us that which is above us, we will soon yield to that which is about us.”

“Don’t think your Bible is dry inside just because it is dusty outside.”

“Why don’t we jump at opportunities as quickly as we jump at conclusions.”

“The strongest words are usually the weakest arguments.”

“If ‘God’ is taken out of ‘good,’ nothing [o] is left.”
