What is involved in worship?

The Bible teaches, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).  These shows that there are two prerequisites to having acceptable worship:  The worshipper must have the right attitude (spirit) and must worship in the right way (truth).
What does it mean to worship in spirit?  If we say that we are worshipping God and yet our thoughts are miles away, or if we say that we are worshipping God but we are not giving Him our all then we are not worshipping in spirit (Matthew 15:8,9).  This would be the attitude of one whose whole desire during a sermon is for it to hurry up and end.  This would also be the attitude of one who will not sing himself but will always complain about how others sound when they sing.  The focus is in the wrong place as a result and therefore the heart is far from God, and the worship unacceptable.
What does it mean to worship in truth?  If we are doing “Bible things in Bible ways” then we are worshipping God in truth.  The Bible is a blue print or pattern for the church of today.  That means that we do not need tens or hundreds of denominations (for such is not to be found in the Bible) but rather one church striving to do just what the Bible says (without addition from man).  The Bible says that involved in worship are the following things:  The Lord’s supper (I Corinthians 11:23-28), singing (Ephesians 5:19), praying (I Timothy 2:8), Teaching (II Timothy 4:1-4), and giving (II Corinthians 9:6-8).  Things must not only be done in the right way, they must also be done on the right day:  The first day of the week (Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 16:2).
If you are unaccustomed to following the Bible blueprint for acceptable worship to God then the Bible teaches that such worship is unacceptable.  When it says in John 4:24 that they “must” worship in that way it means it!  If you have not been worshipping God in the right way, won’t you begin doing so by becoming a member of the church we read about in the Bible?
