This is a feeling shared by many, in fact just this
week my wife told me that she had heard of someone else who felt that they
were not worthy, or capable, of being saved. Some add to this that
they cannot earn salvation. As to the latter statement, no one can
earn salvation for it is a free gift of God. As to the former statements,
all are capable of being saved, for God Himself desires “all men to be
saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth,” (I Timothy 2:4) and
all are worthy when they follow His commands (Revelation 14:12,13).
Unfortunately many have a wrong view of I Peter
4:16-18. These verses are speaking about the fiery trials of this
life, not salvation. These verses teach that when people suffer it
is hard enough to withstand the pain knowing God is on your side, much
harder is it for non-Christians who have no such hope. This is not
a verse teaching that it is hard for God to save you. It is as easy
for God to save as it was for Jesus to forgive sins (Luke 5:23).
You might say it is God’s specialty.
To be sure that what I am saying is true regarding
the context of I Peter 4:16-18, let us turn to the Bible’s best commentary
(itself) and notice another inspired passage penned by Peter. We
will turn our focus to II Peter 1:5-11. The context is the adding
of the Christian graces to one’s life (verses 5-7). It teaches that
the Christian must add to his faith several things: virtue, knowledge,
temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity, or love.
Verse 8 shows that these are the things that will aid in bearing fruit
in one’s life. Those who lack these things, verse 9, are blind and
do not remember that Jesus has cleansed them. Verse 10 urges that
diligence be given toward adding these things. Verse 11 is what we
want to see “For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly
into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
There is an abundance entrance prepared for those
who are saved, and God wants all men to be saved. Therefore there
should not be any reason for people to think that they are not able to
be saved, for God has made them able, and following His commands will make
them worthy. I John 5:3 states, “For this is the love of God, that
we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”
