Probably a week does not go by that something passes
over my desk showing how churches today are trying to draw men to Christ.
There are concerts, seminars, lucky seats, door prizes, famous athletes,
dramatic presentations, parties, and even hot-air balloon and donkey rides
used to try to do such. The above list is certainly not inclusive
of all of the ways that churches try to attract people to Christ.
The New Testament does not even hint at using such tools, and yet in that
day of Greek influence many such tools could have been used: Dramas,
concerts, etc. Let us think just a minute about what the early church
used to draw men to Christ and then apply that to our necessity today to
do likewise.
First, in John 12:32 Jesus shows exactly what is
the basis of His drawing power: “And I, if I be lifted up from the
earth, will draw all men unto me.” Jesus did not say, “and I, if
I be lifted up from the earth, and my followers put on a good show, will
draw all men to me.” The power is in Christ, and his message!
The power to draw men to Christ is not in how popular the guest speaker
is, for they will leave when he does, it is not in excitement, for they
will leave when it ends. The power is in the message.
Second, in the age of entertainment that we live
it has been argued that it takes such to get people to come to worship.
The Bible teaches that the design of worship is not to entertain men, but
rather to please God. Sure these means may sound good, but those
are not the means that God chose (although He could have chosen such).
Paul wrote, through inspiration, in I Corinthians 1:18, “For the preaching
of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are
saved it is the power of God.” Many scoff at the church that uses
only the message of Christ to draw men. God scoffs at those who ridicule
such.
The message, and its plain deliverance, is God’s
method to reach men. It requires that all Christians be involved
in spreading His Word. It requires preachers who preach it plain!
It requires servants who will serve as lights to the world (Matthew 5:13-16).
His plan does not include entertainment, and it certainly does not include
drawing men for their enjoyment’s sake.
