This is an intriguing question which revolves around
things with which we are possibly all familiar. Even this week I
have heard of another such item. While listening to the radio on
the way to work I heard an item about a Baptist Church somewhere that was
dropping the name “Baptist” because it has a negative connotation to so
many. Perhaps some of you have even heard this charge. The
thought then was that they would be more appealing to those who are in
the world if they had the friendlier, and more politically correct, “Fellowship”
tag. This is just an example of the change that we are seeing today
(incidentally the name “Baptist Church” is not a scriptural designation
either (Matthew 18:20)). What was the reason for the change?
To please men. Let us notice a couple of other ways denominations
are trying to change to please men or to be politically correct.
Perhaps some of you have seen a greater move toward
women preachers in denominations. Even I can remember the days when
there were few women preachers, and yet today it is not uncommon to see
women filling that role, and taking even greater positions of leadership.
Who has that pleased? Not God! God does not want women in that
position, and that has not changed! I Timothy 2:12 teaches plainly,
“But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man,
but to be in silence.”
Especially evident today is the move to accept homosexuality
as an alternative lifestyle. The Bible teaches explicitly that it
is not! Furthermore some are trying to change the Bible to make it
fit in with such error, but God does not change (Malachi 3:6) and neither
does His Word (I Peter 1:23,25)! No matter what men may want, or
what may be popular, the Bible has a unified stand against homosexuality
from cover to cover (Genesis 19:22,23; Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26,27;
I Corinthians 6:9,10; I Timothy 1:9; Jude 7) and that cannot be altered
no matter what public sentiment may be.
Men cannot change God’s Word because they think
that a changed church would be more popular. In fact it is change
that created division and denominationalism in the first place, and that
is what God hates. God wants all men to be saved (I Timothy 2:4),
but He has shown that there is only one way to be saved, and that is His
way (Ephesians 4:4-6).
