What is the aim of true worship?

So many today have a wrong idea about what worship is, what it involves, and what is designed to do.  It is not uncommon to find those who feel that worship is designed to be pleasing or entertaining to men in order to draw them to God.  The Bible paints an entirely different picture of the purpose of worship.  From a Biblical standpoint worship is to be directed to and pleasing to only one being:  God.  If God is not pleased with our worship then it is in vain no matter how many men have been pleased by it or drawn to it.  The drawing power of the Gospel is found in the Truth, not in emotionally charged worship services which have but short lived effects.
I Corinthians 1:21 demonstrates this point , "For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe."  Notice the terms found in that verse:
". . . The world by wisdom knew not God . . ." shows that human wisdom simply was not even in the same ball park as the mind of God.  When God through the pages of the Bible told someone how He wanted it to be done He did not leave it up to them to change the way that they were do it, rather He expected what He commanded to be done His way.  Human wisdom in changing His commands was fruitless and wrong.  One great example among many is that of Naaman who had to dip in the Jordan seven times to rid himself of leprosy.  Human wisdom told him that the waters of the Abana and Pharphar in his own land would be better than those of the Jordan, but had he dipped in them he would have arisen from the water seven times all wet and still leprous! (Notice II Kings 5:1-15).
". . . It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe."  Considering the above paragraph let us go a step further with our reasoning.  Man loves to put on a show!  Also, man loves to be entertained (witness the billions that are spent on entertainment in our country yearly).  Since we love these things we think that God must love them to, and need them as we do.  That is human wisdom.  The truth is that God neither needs them nor does He want them in worship services directed to Him.  He said that it pleased Him to save those who believe "by the foolishness of preaching."  He could have used dramas (they were very popular in that day) to draw crowds, but instead He relied on preaching.  That should not be changed in our day or any other.  If we are to worship let us do so the way that He has prescribed!
