“. . . nothing would get done.” So said the
sign that one sees when entering Shannon Hills. That’s a catchy little
phrase, and I guess that is indicative of this society. Must of us
at one time or another have procrastinated. We have waited until
the last week, day, hour, or, I suppose, literally the last minute to do
some important thing.
This is true of students waiting until the last
minute to turn in a paper, drivers waiting until the last minute to register
their cars, or tax payers waiting until the last minutes to file.
Sometimes waiting until the last minute is actually good. I suppose
that militarily you wait until the last minute for any sign of peace.
Sometimes you are even rewarded for doing something at the last minute.
In Memphis there was an auto repair shop that had a last minute policy:
They closed at six, but if your car was there at a minute till they would
stay until it was fixed. It might then be said that we as a society
encourage procrastination. Ben Franklin said, “Never put off till
to-morrow that which you can do today.” Aaron Burr turned that slogan
”Never do to-day what you can put off till to-morrow.” And we seem
to echo his thought at times.
While it is okay to be late sometimes, and even
good to be late at others, there is one thing that must not be put off.
If one is not a Christian he should not put off being converted.
Some claim to need time to study further even after they know what they
need to do (witness Agrippa in Acts 26:28), some simply put it off enjoying
the pleasures of this world that extra little while. Let it be understood
that such procrastination can kill a soul for “the day of the Lord will
come as a thief in the night.” (II Peter 3:10).
