As we now enter another Christmas season I
here make my prediction as to what will take place among some churches
of Christ. Some of our brethren will sully the name of Christ by
their involvement in activities that have no place in the Lord’s church
and cannot be supported by the teaching of the New Testament. Some
will put up their nativity scenes – live or otherwise. Some will
lend their full support to inter-denominational Christmas services, preach
their Christmas sermons and sing their Christmas songs. Some will
run articles in their bulletins announcing December 25th as the birthday
of Jesus Christ. Some will become especially benevolent because at
this time of year “Scrooges” become “saints.” They will announce
that now is the time to spread “Christmas cheer” by warming up our stone-cold
hearts and entering into the spirit of giving, sharing, sacrifice and service.
They will do all of this while at the same
time ad-mitting that we do not know exactly when Christ was born.
An admission like that is the same as saying that there is no New Testament
authority for what they are doing and they know it, but are going to do
it anyway! They will justify their actions by saying that we should
not get caught up in condemning the world for celebrating the birth of
Jesus. In all of this I would like to be wrong and proven a false
prophet. The past, however, serves as a pretty accurate in-dicator
of what will be this year and for years to come.
