It is that time of year again when we celebrate
the independence of this great nation. The fourth of July has provided
my family and me with many great memories throughout the years. As
we reflect on this great day, we need to thank God for the blessings and
privileges we enjoy in this great country. Not everyone in this world
can proclaim his or her freedom as can we. However, there is an independence
that all people of the world can come to know and share—freedom from the
bondage and guilt of sin.
Jesus proclaimed, “And ye shall know the truth,
and the truth shall make you free” (Jn.8:32). All over the world,
men and women are enslaved to sin, including thousands upon thousands,
yea even millions in this land that prides herself in her physical freedom.
Through a knowledge of the truth, and one’s subsequent obedience to the
truth, he is set free from sin (Rom.6:17). All over the globe, those
who have had their sins washed away by the blood of Christ in the waters
of baptism (Rom.6:3,4) unite their voices to proclaim their own independence
day.
It is sad to know that tyrannical rulers and
authoritarian governments oppress many nations and peoples in this world.
Sadder still is the fact that the majority of the world’s population is
enslaved to the most ruthless and heartless ruler ever known—Satan.
As great a blessing as physical independence is, no greater blessing could
ever be known that the freedom from sin through our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ.
