“What profiteth the graven image that the maker
thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the
maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?
Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the
dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold
and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the
earth keep silence before him” (Hab.2:18-20).
In this day and age, idols seem like something
out of a gothic tale which exist only in fiction. On the other hand,
idols exist today as much as in the days of the prophet Habakkuk.
Idols are anything which are placed before God. This might be TV,
money, family, or other things which might come to mind. It is clearly
a violation of God’s will. (Deut. 5:7-9) So what
can we learn from the prophetic words of Habakkuk?
No matter what we place before God in terms
of service, God is still God! He has always been and will always
be. Idols posses no abilities to save our souls. They are merely
without life. It is only through the love of God and the sacrifice
of His only Son that salvation can be obtained. If we continue to
place other things before God and our service to God, we are only serving
idols. There can be only one. (Matt. 6:24). Who are you serving?
God? Or Idols?
